COUNTDOWN FOR CHRISTMAS
In retrospect, I don’t think, even as a child, I ever believed there was a separate entity or person that lived at the North Pole with a bunch of busy elves. Someone who busily made toys all year long and then later delivered them, in one single night, throughout the whole country and with a bunch of high-flying reindeers!
Somehow, I could not get it into my head that some fat old bearded man could come down our chimney with a bag of toys. Never mind the fact that a large backlog with red hot coals were smoldering in the fireplace!
I did however, believe in Santa Claus!
It wasn’t the jolly old man in the red suit and white beard that I believed in. I knew he was a mere symbol! Even though I was very young, it was the goodness of sharing that I truly believed in. It was the mysterious magic of Christmas that I thoroughly enjoyed. My expression of these joys and beliefs became more manifest as Christmas day drew closer and closer.
I could hardly wait for Christmas morning!
Only ten more days ‘til Christmas,
Then Old Santa will arrive
With guns and trains and candy canes
And dolls that look alive!
Only nine more days ‘til Christmas,
I just can’t wait to see,
The many toys for little boys
That Santa has for me!
Only eight more days ‘til Christmas,
The days go, oh so slow.
The sky is bright, it won’t be white,
Oh, how I wish for snow!
Only seven more days ‘til Christmas
And you would, no doubt scream.
If you could see our Christmas tree,
It looks just like a dream!
Only six more days ‘til Christmas
And my parents were too slow,
Hiding my bike and sister’s trike
And thinking I’d never know!
Only five more days ‘til Christmas,
Boy, am I in for a haul!
I never thought they would have bought
A genuine cowhide football!
Only four more days ‘til Christmas
And school is out to boot!
Now we can play ‘til New Year’s Day
With all our toys and loot!
On three more days ‘til Christmas
And Mama says if I’m bad
That Santa don’t find little boys that won’t mind
Their Mother and also their Dad!
Only two more days ‘til Christmas,
Forty-eight hours to be more specific.
I’m minding my Pa and also my Ma.
Christmas will just be terrific!
Only one more day ‘til Christmas,
Tonight it will be Christmas eve!
A mean little elf only thinks of himself,
But it sure will be nice to receive!
Only three hundred sixty five more days ‘til Christmas
And I thought you might like to hear
From a happy lad with a heart that is glad,
Boy, I can’t wait ‘til next year!
